Dealing With the Stress of Terrorism
The joy of knowing the world has become a global
village, that we can have instant contact with, is
fast changing to one of major concern.
The political powers, hard pressed to keep peace
in war torn nations, no longer have the ability
to keep us out of harm's way.
The comfort of an ocean between us and war is over
as we deal daily with concerns of instant terrorism.
How can you relieve the stress from controlling
your life?
You cannot. At least not completely but you can
take steps to alleviate most of the fear of how
you and your family will handle whatever comes
your way.
Friends, Family and Work Place.
Do talk with family and friends about their fears
and about yours.
al Qaida is a reality threat, but close second is
suffering panic attacks or unmanageable anxiety.
Do seek help from a professional if you feel it is
getting out of hand.
This is no time to allow embarassment to rule your
common sense. We are all vunerable to the tactics
of terrorists and should most certainly be as
prepared as possible to handle them.
If your workplace could provide a threat to not
only your nation's stability but your very life,
then talk to the owners. Find out what steps
they are taking, have in place or will instigate
the second a threat is known.
Recall the buddy system of swimming hole days? How
important it was to know you had a backup friend
in case you ran into trouble? Do you have such
a system in place at work, at home, on the road,
with friends, so that you know no one is on their
own in time of emergency?
Our Children Suffer
There will always be the fear of the unknown in
the minds of our children. But the boogey man
under the bed or hiding in the closet, is not
as great a fear as is listening to the threats
of terrorism possibly happening in their happy
world.
Those fertile minds need your calm approach to
each situation filling tv, handled with mind
numbing news rating arrogance. They rival to
show the most horrible of pictures, of terror
out of control and your children will see it
somewhere sometime no matter how well you think
you are protecting them from it.
Do not let the news control you and your family.
Help them understand the reality of what is
going on in the world at large. And make
doubly sure they have several back up systems
in place if you live in a threatened zone. Wherever you live, however you view terrorism,
keep in mind, understanding and safety come
first, panic and anxiety last.
