Editors Comments - Junk Mail Blues

Gosh, these days I am not sure which way to turn when it comes to spam issues. I do know I am as tired of it as the next guy. I would recommend any really good program that would do half of what it says it will effectively, without chewing up my wanted mail as well. Be sure to let us know if you run into any.

If you play the friends sending friends funny emails, then you will know what I mean as the majority of email that suddenly pervades your account will be junk.

If you install a junk fighter or set up your email filters to high, the most you might miss is a funny email. But, for those of us in business online, or who publish an eZine/newsletter, the problem becomes a real pinta to deal with.

We could, conceivably miss your important email to us. And that would not please us one bit. As a result we are working on the security issues presented by using spam programs, setting filters on high, and doing what is recommended as the norm.

If you are missing important email, even though the sender is listed in your address book, and even on your white list of accepted senders, then look to your spam fighter. However much junk mail it saves you bothering with, it might also be keeping your important mail out as well.

Stop for a moment. Why are potential customers not placing an
order? Assuming you have a decent product and prices, why are
they not buying?

In the offline world, customers get to talk to you face-to-face or on the telephone to ask their questions and confirm your offer is what they are looking for.

Onine, you are one of millions hitting them up every day to join this, join that, buy this from me, because I am the "GOAT" [greatest of all time] marketer who will make it happen for you.

So? If you are so great, then give them the online contact information that will allow them to call you, contact you via a real working professional email address. And make sure they know you will contact them as quickly as possible to address their questions.

If they need to contact you, then they can. If all they need to take that final action is to know you are real, and so is your contact information, then they will have it.

It is the audacity of some people that just because someone is making a mountain of money selling software to the rest of us, that those selfsame OS's can be attacked with impunity.

Gates started out in a garage building computers. He saw a market and went for it, thus building an empire. All the more power to him. In spite of our complaints, we are all happily working with one of his Operating Systems today.

What these hackers do not see or want to see, is that there are 10's of millions or the rest of us that use these OS's and that we depend upon them to surf the net or do business online.

So these scumbums have come up with another bug to crash systems with impunity. Yes, Impunity, cause if they do get, caught they do not go to jail for the most part, but go to work for one of the big government agencies.

This new bug is call a 'Bot'. Its' apparent mission is to exploit holes in browsers and to not use just attachments to emails, but to be directly on the email itself, so that as soon as the email is downloaded it becomes active.

Alas & alack there is not a way as of yet to combat these things, except to be on the outlook on how your computer is working from day to day, make sure you have a few cleaners on board, keep them updated and run them often.

QUESTION:
From FC. I am trying to find out how I can copy the large amount of email stored in my folders on Outlook Express to a back up CD. Can you tell me how to do this?

ANSWER:

The contents of individual folders in Outlook Express – including email messages and attachments – are stored in single .DBX files in your Outlook Express store folder. You can locate this folder by selecting Tools -> Options, switching to the Maintenance tab and clicking the Store Folder button. You can then browse to this folder, where you’ll easily be able to locate which DBX file refers to which folder, enabling you to manually copy these to another location for back-up/archiving purposes.

Once backed up, just delete the original file. Should you ever wish to access this folder, just copy the file into your Outlook Express store folder and restart the program – it’ll appear once again in the Folders list.

What shall it be? Yesterday it was rich if I only did this right now. They said so. I didn't so I will not become rich. I will probably save a lot of money and even more grief by not getting sucked in but will I ever know?

Today I am swamped with spam that promises me I can become a minister in 48 hours and enjoy the privileges of marrying people ... even start my own church if I want to.

Do I want to? Hardly. In a moment of fantasy I am picturing myself marrying poor innocents, preaching a legacy of disbelief in 'my church' for which I have no training beyond their promise I AM a minister and it only took 48 hours.

Well I suppose I should be thankful. At least the viagra crowd have laid off trying to convince me I could make something I was not born with bigger. After all, quote - I owed it to her!

For a while there, they got to me pretty bad. I kept watching my husband and waiting for him to tell me he was about to undergo a sex change. After all, I owed it to 'her.'

Like give your head a shake, lady. Quick, the air-wick! Or you can try pine sol. Boy if that idea doesn't lead you to the right outdoor building to drop this load of crap.

Can you imagine the return of the subliminal message? Now that audio post cards are becoming the rage, I can just 'hear' it.

"Hello *(dummy)* Fran Are you going to *(buy this now)* join us *(become smart)* for our webinar in 10 minutes? *(That's all it takes)* This is a courtesy *(do it now!)* reminder as you *(dummy)* requested."

Now what was it I was supposed to be focusing on before I opened the email? I feel like I'm diagonally parked in a parallel universe.
